6 Takeaways from UFC 223
The fact that Conor McGregor’s antics and the whole weigh-in debacle really made a significant impact on Saturday nights UFC card, I thought the card was still actually pretty good and it was full of good fights.
Here are some takeaways from Saturday night…
After his unanimous decision victory over Kyle Bochniak, we had come to find out that Zabit broke his right hand prior to the fight. He still goes out and puts on a fantastic performance. While I am continuously impressed with the Dagestani, I had to take note the heart of Kyle Bochniak. Zabit is so huge for the division and Bochniak was just at a tremendous disadvantage but still showed toughness and made it a really fun fight to watch.
I had mentioned on the podcast that Moicano was my favorite pick on the card and that his leg kicks would be the difference. Moicano put forth an impressive performance and really kept Calvin Kattar off guard. I have really been a fan of Moicano since his UFC debut and you have to think that he might get the winner of Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar. Makes sense to me.
I have seen every UFC performance from Joe Lauzon and the guy is a warrior. i do think after Saturday night it’s time for Joe to take a different route. That beating was tough to watch. In terms of fighter safety, I really liked the fact that his corner stopped the fight and going forward it’s something I’d like to see if it needs to be done. Much respect to joe Lauzon for a great career.
There are few fighters that have grown as much as Rose has. What an impressive performance, she’s one of the most well rounded fighters on the roster, and her next title defense should be against Jessica Andrade. That should be a hell of a fight.
How many were surprised at that outcome? I was totally off on this one, I thought Dunham would have the advantage in the clinch. A knee to the liver by OAM and the fight was over. Don’t know who they put up against OAM next, but it’s time for a top 10 opponent.
Khabib Nurmagomedov & Al Iaquinta
I can’t say enough about these two. First off I am happy that we finally have a guy holding the belt that will actually defend the belt. Secondly, Al Iaquinta performed admirably and the UFC should get him a new deal and some bigger fights. Nothing but respect for both of those guys.
