2018 PGA Championship First Round Leader Bets
The 100th PGA Championship gets going tomorrow from Bellerive Country Club. There’s a certain mysticism surrounding the course, but the consensus is that supreme ball strikers will have the best of it this week. Bellerive measures over 7,300 yards which will give an advantage to the longer hitters this week. Here are my three picks in the round one leader market:
Keegan Bradley – One of the best ball strikers on tour has finally begun to claim the high-end finishes that his brilliant ball-striking deserves. Bradley has recorded four top-25 finishes in his last seven events, and at his previous tournament in Canada, he finished fourth. Over his last 12 rounds, Bradley ranks in the top-10 in both approaching the green and tee to green. Long and straight off the tee, Bellerive should be an excellent fit for Bradley, and he leads my picks for first-round leader this week.
Beau Hossler – Hossler is T2 in first-round scoring average for the season and his prolific play off the tee this year leads me to believe he can make an early impact this week in Missouri. Hossler has now made twelve consecutive cuts on Tour, and he has shown no signs of slowing down his round one scoring average in this period. In five of his last six events, Hossler has shot opening rounds of 65 or lower, and at a three-figure price, he looks a good bet to do something similar at Bellerive.
Jamie Lovemark – One of the earlier starters tomorrow, Jamie Lovemark is another man who has been getting off to fast starts as of late. In his last five events, Lovemark has shot an opening round of 68 or lower in four of these. Lovemark has made 14 of his previous 15 cuts which shows he’s been playing well, despite not getting himself into contention. But off very early tomorrow, Lovemark has the game to shoot low in the best of the conditions.
