2018 THE PLAYERS PGA Prop Bets
With such a deep field as there always is at The Players Championship, I’ve decided to stay within the Top 20 market this week. My first selection in this market is making his debut in this event. It’s a slight worry taking a debutant, but Bryson DeChambeau is playing too well lately to ignore. The ‘Golfing Scientist’ has had three Top-5 finishes in his last four events, and it’s his approach play which is particularly impressive. Discounting The Masters, where no Strokes Gained statistics are available, DeChambeau has gained an enormous 18.9 strokes over his last three events for Strokes Gained-Approaching the Green.
It’s no surprise that he leads the field in Ball Striking over this period, and with TPC Sawgrass being a ball strikers paradise this is a very encouraging sign. DeChambeau is also putting exceptionally well as of late. He ranks seventh in this field for Strokes Gained-Putting over his previous 12 rounds, and he has gained strokes on the greens in six of his last seven events.
As I said, this is the Californian’s first time at The Players, but he does have some good Pete Dye designed course form to lean on. Over the last 24 rounds, DeChambeau ranks 21st in Strokes Gained-Total on Pete Dye courses less than 7,200 yards. Should DeChambeau continue his excellent ball striking, then it’s difficult to see him finishing outside the Top-20, and 11/4 looks more than acceptable.
My second selection in this market is another man whose game is in excellent shape as of late. Webb Simpson hasn’t finished outside the Top-25 at an event since the WGC-Mexico Championship, and he has only missed one cut all season.
Over the previous 12 rounds, Simpson ranks seventh in Strokes Gained-Approaching the Green, 17th in Ball Striking and 19th in Strokes Gained-Total. As well as his excellent form with his long game, Simpson has gained strokes on the green in all but one event this season.
Simpson has two Top-20 finishes at Sawgrass over his last four visits, and for the season he has finished in the Top-20 in six of the ten strokeplay events he has played. At 3/1, it looks a fair price for Simpson to keep his good run of form going at Sawgrass and to land a Top-20 finish.
Top 20 – Bryson DeChambeau 11/4
Top 20 – Webb Simpson 3/1
