2018 The Northern Trust First Round Leader Bets
The opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs kicks off tomorrow from Ridgewood Country Club. The last time Ridgewood hosted an event was back in 2014, and it gave birth to a very eclectic leaderboard that year. With the lack of familiarity for players this week, it may take the worlds best a couple of rounds to get entirely comfortable. Here are three players that I’m choosing to get off to a fast start in New Jersey.
Beau Hossler – Hossler has gone off the boil recently, missing the cut at the PGA Championship and suffering a poor four days at the Open Championship. However, during this period Hossler’s putting has been excellent, and it’s an important factor when considering a bet for the first-round leader. Over his last three events, Hossler has gained an average of 4.5 strokes over the field on the green. Ninth in round one scoring average for the season, and with a red-hot putter in hand, Hossler at 125/1 to light it up on Thursday is a price well worth taking.
Ryan Armour – He missed out on a place in this market last week by one shot, and I’m willing to go back in on Armour this week. The American notched a top-10 finish last week, where all parts of his game looked in good shape. 16th in round one scoring average, and coming off the back of a solid showing at Sedgefield, Armour seems overpriced at 125/1 to start well again this week.
Joel Dahmen – There are plenty of markets where I love Dahmen this week, and the first round leader market is at the top of the list. Dahmen is sixth in round one scoring average this season, and the American is currently playing at the top of his game. Eight top-25 finishes from his last ten events, Dahmen is striping the ball currently and he ranks first in strokes gained approaching the green and second in ball striking over his previous 24 rounds. 150/1 is a massive price for someone playing so well and who is also known for being a fast starter.
Recommended Bets (All Each Way)
• Beau Hossler 125/1 (5 places)
• Ryan Armour 125/1 (5 places)
• Joel Dahmen 150/1 (5 places)
