2018 Open Championship First Round Leader Bets
The 147th Open Championship is upon us, and Carnoustie will be the setting to see who can take home the claret jug. The dry and crisp conditions have led to confusion over what is the best strategy to conquer this famous course this week, with several players differing in their expected approach for the week.
Tiger Woods and Justin Rose have been outspoken in preferring a more strategic and positional approach for this event, while the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory Mcilroy and Jon Rahm have all said that they will be ultra aggressive and take driver as often as possible.
With clear conditions expected, and just slightly more wind forecasted for the afternoon, here are my three plays this week for the first-round leader market.
Kevin Na – Fresh off a win at the Greenbrier, Kevin Na will be full of confidence heading to Carnoustie. Na has performed solidly at past Open Championship’s and has now made the cut each time in the last four years. As well as having his iron game razor sharp which should bode well for this week, Na has a scoring average of just over 68 in his last three opening rounds at the Open Championship. With an early tee time, Na can get off to a good start once more here in Scotland.
Luke List – Coming off a good showing at the Scottish Open and playing in the second group tomorrow morning, Luke List has the potential to go low in round one. List ranks 12th in ball striking, fourth in strokes gained off the tee and tenth in strokes gained tee to green over his previous 24 rounds. His performance on the greens has been weak all year, but with slower greens which usually help poorer putters, it’s worth taking a chance that List can produce a decent day on the greens tomorrow morning.
Beau Hossler – A first-round specialist, Beau Hossler looks well overpriced to get off to a hot start this week. Hossler ranks second in round one scoring average this season and is currently hitting the ball excellently. Hossler has recorded back to back top-six finishes in his last two starts, and in this period his short game has been lights out. Hossler ranks first in the field for putting over his last eight rounds, and with a hot putter in hand, the round one specialist can defy his odds and once more find himself at the top of the leaderboard after day one.
1st Round Leader (All Each Way)

• Luke List 100/1 (Six places)
• Beau Hossler 100/1 (Eight Places)
