2018 WGC Bridgestone First Round Leader Bets
The third WGC of the year gets underway tomorrow from Firestone Country Club. A familiar course for most golf fans, with tight tree-lined fairways which will make ball striking extremely important this week. The reduced field makes it tricky to find value in this market this week, but here are two picks that I’m looking for to get off to a fast start in round one.
Charley Hoffman – The perennial fast starter in events throughout his career has struggled a little in 2018. But over the last month, Hoffman has been in much better form. The Californian hasn’t finished outside the top-30 in his previous five events and last week began with a round of 68. Hoffman is in the third group out tomorrow so he will get the best of the greens and at 55/1 he looks good value to get off to another hot start.
Emiliano Grillo – Grillo was very disappointing at the Open Championship, but on the whole this year he has been excellent, and he arrives at a course that suits his game. Grillo has hit over 70% of his fairways this season, and on a tight course such as Firestone, this will be crucial, while he sits 13th in strokes gained total for his last 24 rounds. He’s shot a 64 in round one already this year, and at 100/1 on a course which should suit him, I’ll take a chance on the Argentine to deliver a good round one performance in Akron.
Round One Leader (All Each Way)
• Charley Hoffman 55/1 (5 places)
• Emiliano Grillo 100/1 (5 places)
