2018 NHL Atlantic Division Preview

2018 NHL Atlantic Division Preview

Continuing on from the Metropolitan division, we got the Atlantic Division. This division excites me the most, not only cause I am a Leafs fan, but because it has some of the most young and upcoming players in this league. With players such as Nikita Kucherov, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Jack Eichel, Aleksander Barkov, Thomas Chabot, Rasmus Dahlin, David Pastrnak and many more. You will be seeing tons of goals in this division as well as tons of puckline bets against some of the lower tier teams.

The Boston Bruins add Chris Wagner, a guy who fit into the Bruins line-up perfectly as a 3rd Liner. The Bruins enter the 2018-19 season as a team that battled the Lightning for the #1 spot in the Atlantic Division, and they will continue to do so. With the offensive players such as Jake DeBrusk, Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak, this team will get wins and score in a bunch. Barring any injuries, I expect them to finish in the 1-3 slot in the division. The Buffalo Sabres, were very busy this off-season. After drafting swedish stud, Dahlin, they moved O’Reilly to the Blues for a package of players and signed Carter Hutton, funny enough, who played for the Blues. This team added many small pieces to their team, and I think #1 overall pick Dahlin is going to be the biggest piece. He improves their woeful defense by a large margin, and they will surprise some teams this year. Henrik Zetterberg, leaves the Detroit RedWings and puts them in a bit of a pickle. They are now without any true reliable source of offense, and will lean on the likes of Nyquist, Dylan Larkin, and Anthony Mantha. This team will struggle but could muster wins in a division vs. Teams like Ottawa and Montreal. The Florida Panthers, a team on the rise in the Atlantic Division. They finished with 93 points last season, and add Mike Hoffman and his 56 points. This team is full of young stars (Ekblad, Barkov, Huberdeau, Trocheck) who are just showing glimpses of their potential in the NHL. This team will be back in the playoff race, and shock some teams, as I know some people think they can possible sneak in. Next up, the Montreal Canadiens. Boy what happened to this team in the past 2 years. They enter this season without their Captain Shea Weber, and traded last years captain Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights. This team appears to be in Full-rebuild mode, as they will feature a young squad this season. Watching them play in the preseason, this team will be very chippy and “in your-face”, especially with the likes of Max Domi featuring on that first line. The Ottawa Senators, I think I should just skip this one, as this team went into shambles as current players are already mentioning they will not return next season (Mark Stone). As well, trading away their captain, and losing the trust of their players is not a good start to the 2018-19 season. This team is in absolute rebuild mode, and needs to fire Melnyk. But they do feature some good players in Duchene, Stone and Tkachuk Do not expect much from them this season. Last years Atlantic Winners, The Tampa Bay Lightning, this team led by Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov is an Eastern Conference favourite to finish first (as everyone who watches hockey knows). There is not much to talk about this team, as Kucherov will continue to impress everyone this season (Not only his shootout goals) and will battle for the Art Ross trophy. Onto my favourite, the Toronto Maple Leafs. This team won the John Tavares sweepstakes, and improved their depth down the middle immensely (John Tavares, Auston Matthews and Nazem Kadri) and have now spread the talent throughout the lineup, making matchups for their opponents much harder. The Leafs do enter the 2018-19 season with tons of question marks, especially on the blue-line and with William Nylander. The blue-line will continue to be a question mark, as they do not have a #1 defenseman, and will make the workload for Andersen much harder this season. As well, the Leafs have yet to resolve the Nylander situation, who enters the season without a contact. Expect the Leafs with the addition of Tavares, to battle Boston and Tampa Bay for the #1 spot in the Atlantic Division. This division will be a dog-fight for the #1 spot, as it will be a race to the finish with these teams.

    • Hard to take one of these teams. Boston, Toronto and Tampa will be all battling for top seed as everyone knows. It will be a neck and neck race. No Futures here as I believe there is no value. Leafs/Boston/Tampa are almost identical lines (+170)
